The Kokomo Summer Concert Series kicks off this week with a blast from the past.
Rubber Soul, a Beatles tribute band, will kick off the highly-anticipated summer music series at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 11. This series brings big-name artists to the Kokomo Performing Arts Pavilion in Foster Park for a free and family-friendly concert.
Fans of the Fab Four will love this walk down memory lane, said Brian McGuire, who performs as the band’s Paul McCartney. He said the band’s roots were something of an accident.
“I was working on an original project and I put out a classified ad. It said ‘looking for Ringo,’” he said. “Ringo Star had a great style, and as a songwriter, this was what I was looking for.”
Once the ad was published, McGuire got a call.
“He was speaking in his English accent, and he goes, ‘You found Ringo!’” McGuire said. Whelan Keenan had previously played in and toured with a tribute group called Beatles Forever.
What initially started as McGuires’ original project, morphed into a nationally recognized band when Keenan asked McGuire to start Rubber Soul The Tribute together.
“I was just a complete Beatles freak, so I gave it a try and we never looked back,” McGuire continued.
One of the things that set Rubber Soul apart from other Beatles cover bands is the group’s attention to detail. They play their sets with the same style of guitars and amplifiers, as well as dressing up as the original Beatles. Their iconic set features your favorite Beatles tunes and solo hits from John, Paul, George and Ringo.
Opening up for Rubber Soul is classic rock and dance cover band Wunderlick, with favorites from the ’60s to the present.
The Kokomo Summer Concert continues all summer long with nine free performances from across the genres. Check out more information on upcoming concerts at Kokomo Performing Arts Pavilion by clicking here.
